A native of Guatemala, Marta is from the Maya Mam ethnic group and speaks Mam, Spanish, and English. She joined EBSC in 2012 as a client, and as a volunteer in 2020. She started working in 2021 as an outreach community leader to give people the right information. She is passionate about helping the Mayan and Latinx communities with interpretation and other support.
I am from the robust coffee mountains,
cardamom, guavas and oranges.
From the smell of freshly ground coffee
I am from where the birds sing every
morning, especially before it rains.
I am from the harvest. It is fresh and
made with the heart.
I am from the beautiful landscapes and green color of the mountains.
I am from the foothills and mountain
ranges, of the most active fire volcano/volcan de fuego y Acatenango in Guatemala and where the great thunder that makes every day seems like a storm.
I am from a beautiful hut full of flower gardens, I am from the moon and stars bright up the sky.
I’m from pray and believe in God.
I am from fresh coffee and bread every morning.
I am from tamales, chuchitos, enchiladas and chicken broth, from many traditional foods.
I am from the Mayan ethnic group, from where my traditional clothes and my language are part of my roots.
I am from where 23 languages are spoken.
And now I am from the Bay Area in North America.
I am from birds that migrate in search of food and for a better future life.
I am from the state of Florida where
I suffered working in the field, picking
strawberries, blueberries, tomatoes, etc.
From where I suffered from thirst,
hunger and heat.
From where I almost fainted from the heat.
I from where I had no right to a break.
From where the contractors don’t care about others lives.
I am from where I did not know my
rights as a worker, from where I spoke zero English.
I am from who did not have the
opportunity to continue with my studies in my country, and from where men had more rights than women.
And now I am grateful to East Bay
Sanctuary Covenant who helped me
obtain my documents and now I am a
citizen, I know how it feels to be illegal and not speak English.
I am from the the Voces Maya/ Mayan Voices Group who is helping and supporting the health, legal rights and social resources of Mam and speakers and Spanish speakers.
I am from who has the courage and an honor to help others, and know that many people feel unsupported as a woman. I felt it and lived it.
I am little by little learning about my
rights.
Man and woman have the same rights.
I am from little by little learning English.
I have more than 1000 days of streak.

Soy de las robustas montañas de café,

Del olor del café recién molido.
Soy de donde los pájaros cantan todas las mañanas, sobre todo antes de que llueva.
Soy de la cosecha. Es fresco y hecho con el corazón.
Soy de los hermosos paisajes y color verde de las montañas.
Soy de las estribaciones y cordilleras, del volcan de fuego y Acatenango más activo de Guatemala y donde el gran trueno que hace que cada día parezca una tormenta.
Soy de una hermosa choza llena de
jardines de flores,
Soy de la luna y las estrellas iluminan el cielo.
Soy de orar y creer en Dios.
Soy de el café y pan recién hechos todas las mañanas.
Soy de tamales, chuchitos, enchiladas
y caldo de pollo, de muchas comidas
tradicionales.
Soy de la etnia maya, de donde mi vestimenta tradicional y mi idioma son parte de mis raíces.
Soy de donde se hablan 23 idiomas.
Y ahora soy del Área de la Bahía en
Norteamérica.
Soy de aves que migran en busca de
alimento y de una vida mejor en el futuro.
Soy del estado de Florida donde sufrí
trabajando en el campo, recogiendo fresas, arándanos, tomates, etc.
Desde donde sufrí sed, hambre y calor.
Desde donde casi me desmayo por el calor.
Yo desde donde no tenía derecho a un
descanso. De donde a los contratistas no les importan las vidas de los demás.
Soy de donde no conocí mis derechos como trabajador, de donde no hablaba inglés.
Soy de quien no tuve la oportunidad de continuar con mis estudios en mi país, y de donde los hombres tenían más derechos que las mujeres.
Y ahora estoy agradecido con East Bay
Sanctuary Covenant que me ayudó a
obtener mis documentos y ahora soy
ciudadano, sé lo que se siente al ser ilegal y no hablar inglés.
Soy del grupo Voces Maya/Mayan Voices que está ayudando y apoyando la salud, los derechos legales y los recursos sociales de los mam y los hablantes de español.
Soy de quien tiene el coraje y el honor
de ayudar a los demás, y sé que muchas personas se sienten desamparadas como mujer. Lo sentí y lo viví.
Poco a poco voy conociendo mis derechos.
El hombre y la mujer tienen los mismos derechos.
Estoy de poco a poco aprendiendo ingles. Tengo más de 1000 días de racha. Mi pasatiempo es aprender inglés en mi teléfono. Gracias por escuchar.
