ASV Migration Project: Middle School Educators' Guide

This curriculum project was piloted with a youth advisory board, middle schoolers from Brightworks School, and includes testimonials from the Now You Hear Us podcast developed by displaced young women connected with East Bay Sanctuary Covenant (EBSC), Voice of Witness, and Youth UnMuted. We encourage educators to facilitate guest speakers and field trips to immigrant-serving organizations to deepen understanding and empathy around the asylum-seeker experience and encourage civic participation.

We use a social emotional learning (SEL) approach that helps students recognize how their emotions impact their behaviors and fosters the ability to put oneself in the shoes of another person and communicate with people from diverse backgrounds. The curriculum is designed to help students to express complex thoughts about hard topics, understand their actions in various situations, and develop more empathy for others within their community.

We encourage all educators to look at the ASV Stories and Resources section or https://sanctuaryvoices.org/stories/ to find first person narratives you can bring into your classroom, regardless of whether or not you have 6 class periods for the key curriculum that follows.

Please feel free to reach out to us at sanctuaryvoices@eastbaysanctuary.org with any questions, suggestions, or feedback about teaching the curriculum. If you are located in the San Francisco Bay Area we can also help organize a narrator classroom visit or a field trip to EBSC.
